CASTLE OF MIRAMARE

Along the eponymous Viale Miramare, about 8 km from the Albergo alla Posta and a few steps from our 4-star Hotel Miramare, you can admire one of the symbols of the city of Trieste and its illustrious Austrian past.

Jewel of Maximilian of Habsburg

This castle, which among Trieste’s monuments is by far the most visited, was built in 1856 on an idea of theArchduke of Austria Maximilian of Habsburg.

In a picturesque location, directly overlooking the sea from the scenic promontory of Grignano, Maximilian wanted to build his residence here, blending the neo-medieval and Romantic genres and forming a widespread model for many European nobles in the centuries to come.

Around Miramare Castle, Maximilian created a lush park, with statues and embellishments of all kinds and especially incredible botanical species from his many travels.

The fate of the castle soon became inextricably linked with that of Maximilian of Habsburg himself, who was killed in Mexico in 1867: still under the Habsburg empire it followed alternating fortunes, until it came under Italian administration at the end of World War I.

The Miramare Castle Museum

Since 1955, the Palace-Monument has housed the “Historical Museum of Miramare Castle,” which is still open to the public.

It represents a unique opportunity to visit the rooms that were inhabited by Maximilian and his wife Charlotte, which are well preserved and retain all the original furnishings including ornaments, furniture and objects dating back to themid-19th century. Also not to be missed is Throne Room, recently restored to its former glory.
