What about taking a stroll along the walls of
St. Justin’s Castle? For a while, you will feel as if you were one of the lords of the past who built similar fortresses so they could guarantee the control, even if only by taking a mere look, of the entire city below.
Its history
St. Justin’s hill, upon which the Castle was built, had always been the place destined to host a fortress dating back to Roman times, due to its strategic position.
In this case, St. Justin’s Castle dates back to the 15th century and it owes its construction (referring to the first part of the castle to be built, the Casa del Capitano Imperiale (The Home of the Imperial Captain ) to the indemnity that the Trieste population were forced to pay Frederick III of Habsburg, so he could position one of his Caesarean captains there to guard and protect the city.
Trieste Cathedral
Situated in the same Piazza from which you access the Castle, you can visit St. Justin’s Cathedral, the city’s main church.
From the Albergo alla Posta to St. Justin’s Castle
Starting from the
Albergo alla Posta, you can reach
St. Justin’s Castle on foot (it is about 1km away).
However, for those who prefer a more leisurable trip, we recommend you take the bus which leaves from the stop opposite the hotel itself in piazza Oberdan and then to return on foot, so you will be able to enjoy the pleasurable downhill route as well as the spectacular
panoramic view of Trieste.
The Museum
The importance of exploiting St. Justin’s Castle for tourism purposes was only fully realised as from the 1930s, when its internal areas were reorganised. Today, the hall and the external areas can be visited together with St. George’s Chapel, the Stairway of Honour, the Caprin Anti-Chamber, the Armoury and the Lapidario Tergestino (Lapidarium).
